Nishkian Chamberlain has recently been involved in a number of exciting education projects throughout the Southern California area. The projects below highlight the variety of work being done by Nishkian Chamberlain in this market sector.
The new Marshall Classroom Building for Oxnard School District is a two story structure approximately 20,000 square feet. The building is primarily timber framed with plywood shear wall lateral systems in both directions. The structure contains classrooms and an outdoor walkway/patio at the second floor. Above the outdoor walkway at the upper level there is an open canopy structure supported by cantilevered steel posts.
The Moorpark College “Student Center Refresh” project aims to take an existing 1960’s masonry building and breathe new life and functionality into the facility. The current retrofit concept will replace outdated cafeteria and office space with comfortable student lounges and meeting/activity areas. A lighter, airier feel will be achieved while also strategically remaining below the threshold requirements that trigger an overall required structural rehabilitation in public schools (California Code of Regulations, Section 4-309). The revised structure will also feature a revamped patio area and expanded Health Center floorplan.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has currently identified several existing schools that will implement upgrades to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The District has committed to expend at least $67.5 million on accessibility renovations or repairs to existing school sites.
The accessibility enhancement projects will remove barriers, bettering programmatic access and school-site accessibility for students, families, and the community. The project scope includes, but is not limited to the following:
- · Upgrades to existing ramps as necessary
- · Upgrades to existing handrails as necessary
- · Upgrades to path of travel slopes
- · Installation of new accessible lunch tables as necessary
- · Upgrades to selective restrooms
- · Installation of new stage lifts
- · Upgrades to selective drinking fountains
- · Upgrades to passenger loading zones and parking
- · Installation of selective elevators
Nishkian Chamberlain’s engineers are playing a key role in collaboration with our architectural partners and the school district to meet very tight deadline requirements on eight of twenty school locations identified by the district’s Facilities Services Division (FSD) Strategic Execution Plan (SEP).
