Meadowlark Elementary School is a 71,700 square foot, single story elementary school building located in northwest Bozeman. It is Bozeman’s 8th elementary school and was designed to be similar to previous elementary schools in the district. The Bozeman School District elected to work with the same team that designed and built Hyalite Elementary School in 2009—Prugh & Lenon Architects, general contractor and construction manager Langlas & Associates, and structural engineers Nishkian Monks, PLLC. Meadowlark Elementary School’s floor plan builds on the previous elementary school plans with changes suggested by the staff such as additional storage space, a separate cafeteria, and a separate section for kindergarten classrooms.
The structural systems consist of a clay masonry walls supporting steel bar joists and a metal deck roof. The foundation system is composed of conventional strip and spread footings. Specially reinforced clay masonry shear walls transfer the seismic from the roof and into the foundation. The structure has an Energy Star rating of 85 for its heating and ventilation system, and includes the following green building components: critical under-slab insulation, radiant floor heat, interior/exterior wall connections, mechanical systems, and lighting controls.
Nishkian Monks also served as the primary special inspection agency for this project to help ensure a high level of quality throughout the construction process. Due to the cold Montana winters this involved verifying cold weather procedures were utilized in the masonry construction in addition to verifying rebar placement and grouting of the masonry walls. Over the past nine years, Nishkian Monks has completed several school projects in Wyoming and Montana including—Chief Joseph Middle School, Hyalite Elementary School, Monforton School, Ophir Elementary School, Ophir Middle School, Ophir High School, Saddle Peak Elementary School, Clear Creek Middle School in Buffalo Wyoming, Montana State University’s Marsh Large Animal Laboratory, the Marsh Small Animal Laboratory, Montana State University’s Animal Bio-Science Building, and the complete renovation, seismic rehabilitation, and new addition of Bozeman High School.
