The MacDonald West
Project Description: The MacDonald West is a seven-story, 30,752 square feet building with a ground floor that houses additional office space for the MacDonald Center, a social services provider, with 42 low-income studios on the floors above. Located in Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown area, the center provides for the poor by offering support, food, and community services to those in need. Demolition of the previous building, the 106-year-old West hotel, had to be completed delicately because the building is situated between two others as well as within public transit lines. The new building style honors the history of the area while also including environmentally friendly features such as low-flow water fixtures and an eco-roof with solar panels. This project was a recipient of the 2013 Hammurabi Award - Masonry and Ceramic Tile Institute of Oregon, Award of Merit for Design and Use of Masonry. Location: Portland, OR Architect: LRS Architects Contractor: Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Co.
